Title: In this post, I’ll be commenting on a youtube video called “Understanding Copyright Law and Exclusive Right” by Maggie Lange.
Comments: I found this video interesting and informative, but not necessarily that surprising. I’ve heard about music copyrighting before, and how difficult and unnatural the whole process is. I didn’t know about the mechanical copyright clause, but it makes sense to me.
In my opinion, we should have some structure to intellectual property, so artists can protect what is theirs. Yes, the system does screw them over, but that means the system needs to be refined and rethought, not thrown away all together. Sharing is all well and good, but when you can’t claim rights over a song you wrote or painting you created, that’s gone too far.
This is a problem we’re going to see more of in the future, and is worth some careful consideration. If we can solve these problems before the issue snowballs and becomes so large that nothing can go through it, the problems we have today will seem minuscule in comparison. I don’t have the answers yet, but our generation or another must figure this out.
